Finding rodent droppings is the easiest way to know you may have an infestation in your Toronto home or commercial property. But you may not always see the droppings right away, so here are a few tell-tale signs of rodent infestation:

  • Upset pets: Pets get stirred up when they hear and smell rodents in the house. This is usually the first sign of rodent infestation.
  • Noises: These can be those of faint scratching, faint squeaks and squawks at night, and squealing that mimics wind blowing.
  • Evidence of gnawing and ‘chew’ marks: Usually found alongside stairs, cupboards, door frames, on the floor boards. Look for tooth marks and wood shavings (similar in consistency to sawdust) around doors, baseboards, and cabinets. Marks on food containers can also be a clue that you have “company”.
  • Burrows or nests: Rodents construct nests of shredded paper and similar debris. They also make holes or burrows outside.; check for nests in basements, garages, storage areas, closets, and other dark, enclosed places for nests or "stolen" materials.
  • Grease marks: When traveling alongside pipes, beams, and walls, rats and mice may leave greasy smear marks and dirt trails. Look for these marks especially along wall areas close to the ground.
  • Tracks: Footprints and tail marks on dirty, dusty, or muddy surfaces can indicate activity. If you suspect that rodents have taken up residence in an otherwise impeccably clean area of your GTA home, office, warehouse or commercial premises, lay down a sprinkling of talcum powder. It may help you to spot a trail and be sure whether or not you have a rodent infestation.
  • Droppings: The most visible sign – typically around five millimetres long with mice or twice that size if they are rat droppings. Most often found near food sources or along walls and pipes, rat and mice droppings are usually black and shiny.
